Preparing your Facility for JCAHO’s New Life Safety Compliance Evaluation Process

With the addition of Life Safety Code Specialist Surveyors to JCAHO survey teams, hospitals can expect a more detailed Life Safety compliance evaluation of their facility, as compared to past accreditation surveys. Presenters and Panelists:

Leo T. Old, MS, CIH , PE , CHFM

Leo has 13 years of experience in working with healthcare institutions on issues related to infection control, hazardous materials, and regulatory compliance.  Leo obtained his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Christian Brothers University in 1993 and his Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Memphis in 2002.  Leo is a certified industrial hygienist, a registered fire protection engineer and a certified healthcare facility manager.  Leo served as General Safety Officer for 4 years at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis , TN. As General Safety Officer, Leo was responsible for fire safety, emergency preparedness and other environmental health and safety matters.  Leo has served as an occupational and environmental health consultant for 9 years.   Leo has provided health and safety training to a variety of organizations, including healthcare institutions, research laboratories, and industrial facilities. Leo regularly serves as a guest speaker at national conferences and local chapter meetings for the American Industrial Hygiene Association, the American Society for Healthcare Engineering, and the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology.

Dean H. Samet, CHSP

Dean serves as Director of Regulatory Compliance Services for Smith Seckman Reid, Inc. where he is responsible for heading up and coordinating efforts of SSR's Compliance Management Services & Facility Management Services team. He brings 30 years of combined construction management, safety, and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations experience. For the past 15 years Dean has served with the JCAHO and most recently as their Associate Director & Senior Engineer and as a Certified Joint Commission Surveyor with the Accreditation Operations Department's Standards Interpretation Group. His responsibilities included developing, interpreting, and surveying for the JCAHO Environment of Care Standards. Dean was a JCAHO/JCR faculty member, speaker, and surveyor trainer. He was also the Joint Commission's chief liaison to the NFPA, ASHE, AIA, DOD, VA, IHS, and CMS for EC issues. He has co-authored the Environment of Care Essentials, Engineering Handbook, and EC News. Dean also has national and international construction management experience, primarily with hospitals. He received his Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology degree from Southern Illinois University and is a Master of Health Services Administration candidate with St. Joseph 's College. Dean is also a Certified Healthcare Safety Professional.
