Sound Masking – Protecting Patient Health Information in Today's Healthcare Facility

Although many states already enforce privacy protections, HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) establishes a federal floor for privacy and is the first comprehensive federal plan for health privacy protections. As a federal mandate, non-compliance is subject to penalties including fines, and in some cases, imprisonment.

It is important to understand what you can do to prepare your facilities to protect PHI. This presentation will focus on the oral privacy portion of HIPAA and how protecting oral privacy can be achieved with sound masking and proper acoustics.

Join us for a 90-minute audio conference on oral privacy and the Federal mandate HIPAA that requires healthcare providers and facilities to limit the disclosure of personal health information in written, electronic and oral forms.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define HIPAA, who it affects, who it protects and how it is monitored.
  • Discuss the need for oral communication in healthcare and what "minimum necessary," "incidental disclosure" and "reasonable safeguards" mean with relation to HIPAA
  • Review accepted industry standards for speech privacy and practices for achieving and documenting oral privacy
  • Define the various levels of privacy and review the “absorb”, “block” and “cover” theories for addressing acoustics.
  • Understand how adding sound masking as part of your facility's acoustics can help you achieve oral privacy and how this can be documented
