Reducing Medical Errors in the Acute Care Environment by Design

The healthcare community has long understood the immense responsibility associated with the services it provides to its patients. Despite vigilant efforts by regulatory agencies, advocacy groups, and hospital quality assurance programs, the acute care environment suffers from a chronic inability to effectively eliminate medical errors. The participant will discover the actual incidence, nature and severity of medical errors threatening patient safety in the Nation’s healthcare delivery system and consider the key factors contributing to chronic patient vulnerability.

This presentation will introduce the participant to the 2001 National Learning Laboratory’s safety driven design principles as he challenges traditional healthcare design concepts.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain how to create an awareness of the incidence and severity of medical error
  • Identify ways to develop an understanding of the latent conditions created through architectural design that increase the risk of harm
  • Interpret in the National Learning Laboratory's recommendations for designing of safe hospital environment.
