Solving Nurse Burnout and Dissatisfaction through Design

|
Like rest of the business world, hospitals are constantly grappling with the issue of employee retention—seeking the perfect combination of work environment and benefits to keep employees satisfied on the job. For hospitals, the issue of employee retention has more far reaching affect, assuring not only customer satisfaction and loyalty, but in many cases the customer's very survival.
According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, one factor contributing to the nursing shortage is job burnout and dissatisfaction. More than 75% of RN's believe nursing shortage presents a major problem for their quality of work life, quality of patient care, and the amount of time they are able to spend with patients. Another study, published by Health Affairs, cites that more than 40% of nurses working in hospitals reported being dissatisfied with their job, and one out of every three hospital nurses under the age of 30 is planning to leave their current job in the next year.
The statistics are astounding. But although the macro issues related to nursing shortage are beyond an individual hospital's control, at the micro level, hospitals can take measures to enhance nurse retention and job satisfaction—through facilities design.
