Designing In Flexibility- How to design and build to minimize cost, time, and waste of future renovation

|
When facing almost any major Capital Improvement project involving the “bricks and mortar”, most health care institutions seem to be very clear on the factors surrounding the current need (sometimes called the “pain”) that is the catalyst behind the project. For most of these, the planning accommodates no more than about a five-year window. Many fail, perhaps due to unwillingness or (more likely) an inability to predict the future - to look beyond the near horizon and really understand the impact of current decisions on the future, resulting in obstacles to future growth and repositioning. Many of these challenges can be mitigated through careful planning and design right now!
Studies have revealed that there are literally hundreds of decisions to be made during each step of the planning/design process. Many of those judgments have the potential to affect, not only the success of the current effort, but also the ability of the institution to adapt to any future evolution in the delivery of care.
This ninety-minute audio conference will provide an opportunity to debate and discuss potential opportunities and methods that can be implemented at various stages of the design/construction process, to reduce the waste and disruption that translate into cost and potential liability during those inevitable renovations and expansions as health care continues to “morph”.
|
Learning Outcomes:
- Develop an understanding of the importance of including master planning and long-range thinking in absolutely every capital improvement project.
- Identify the “Top Ten” planning and design decisions that, if made now, will help to minimize disruption and waste during a future construction project.
- Evaluate the potential short term impact of those decisions against the long term benefits.
- Discuss how code and regulatory issues may limit or otherwise impact future flexibility.
