OSHA's Targeting of Healthcare Facilities - Preparing Your Facility Before an Inspection

According to current Labor Department statistics, hospitals and personal care facilities employ approximately 1.6 million workers at 21,000 work sites. There are many occupational health and safety hazards throughout the hospital. This audio conference focuses on some of the hazards and controls found in the hospital setting, and describes standard requirements as well as recommended safe work practices for employee safety and health.

Alicia M. Dorsey, M.S., C.H.E.M.
President
Dorsey Health and Safety Consulting
Ms. Dorsey holds an undergraduate degree in biology with a chemistry minor as well as a master of science degree in Occupational Health and Safety Engineering from West Virginia University . Immediately after graduation, she was employed as a compliance officer / industrial hygienist for the Occupational Health and Safety Administration – NC (OSHA). Many of the inspections conducted by Ms. Dorsey focused on various industry, healthcare, air quality, asbestos abatement, and ergonomics. While employed by OSHA, Ms. Dorsey was on the Ergonomics Task Force, performing ergonomic inspections of many different employers. She was also selected to act as a liaison between employers and the North Carolina Ergonomic Resource Center .
Ms. Dorsey entered private industry by accepting a position with a 1000 bed hospital. She managed the health and safety programs at the hospital as well as all of the compliance issues for 11 physician practices owned by the hospital. While working for the hospital, she developed health and safety programs including but not limited to Hazard Communication, Ergonomics, Asbestos Management, Indoor Air Quality, Hazard Surveillance, and JCAHO Environment of Care Management Plans as well as conducting countless air monitoring studies. During this time, Ms. Dorsey was on faculty at North Carolina A & T University , teaching industrial hygiene and health and safety.
In 1997, Ms. Dorsey began private consulting. She continues to provide a comprehensive analysis of health and safety compliance for her clients as well as air monitoring, educational services, employee training and program development. Her clients have included law firms, industrial manufacturers, and healthcare providers. She currently has clients in several states.
Ms. Dorsey is currently a member of the Centre County Environmental Health and Safety Roundtable, AIHA, and JCAHO. She has recently been appointed to the West Virginia University Industrial and Management Systems Engineering Advisory Organization. Ms. Dorsey continues to lecture at Penn State University.
