New Surgery Suite Design - Addressing Patient Privacy, Staff Interaction and New Technologies

Many factors have driven recent changes in the surgical environment design from increased privacy requirements for patients to ever changing technology. Several key factors have had the greatest impact, such as the shift from separate Pre-op and PACU units to a merged environment, as well as the increased use of minimally invasive surgical techniques, which have spurred the increased size of Operating Rooms. The greatest recent evolution comes from the co-location of the surgical and interventional arenas.

Join us for a 90-minute audio conference as Douglas Gordon, Senior Medical Planner and Surgical & Interventional Suites Design Specialist traces some of the drivers of today’s design approach changes, as well as the potential directions for surgical design evolution. A major focus of the presentation will focus on the challenges faced in designing for an environment that is known to change.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify past design influences and current practices in the layout of the overall surgical suite.
  2. Discuss varying perspectives on patient privacy and staff interaction during the prep and recovery stages, as well as their impact on the design of the surgery suite.
  3. Review major technologies that are being added to the surgical environment and the options available for incorporating these technologies.
  4. Discuss the design impact of merging the surgical and interventional suites.
  5. Review the varied approaches to the merging of these suites, from side-by-side to fully integrated; and from different rooms for different purposes to a standardized surgical/interventional procedure room.
