The federal government has called on healthcare facilities to prepare for a pandemic influenza that could last for weeks or months, yet a recent survey showed most hospitals could only continue operating without external help for less than one week. Shortages of beds, respirators and other critical medical supplies are expected to be widespread, and health care worker absenteeism is likely to soar. New pandemic preparedness guidance from OSHA says health care employers should not count on receiving any additional supplies of respirators and PPE not already stockpiled.
