Program #1: Supersized Healthcare: Creating Healing Environments for Obese Patients

Many factors have driven recent changes in the surgical environment design from increased privacy requirements for patients to ever changing technology. Several key factors have had the greatest impact, such as the shift from separate Pre-op and PACU units to a merged environment, as well as the increased use of minimally invasive surgical techniques, which have spurred the increased size of Operating Rooms. The greatest recent evolution comes from the co-location of the surgical and interventional arenas.

Obesity is a significant healthcare concern in the United States. More and more healthcare organizations offer the morbidly obese population a “new lease on life” through bariatric surgery programs. Surgical procedures that facilitate controlled, medically supervised weight loss are increasing throughout the country.

Specialty programs, such as bariatric surgery, create unique design challenges and opportunities. These issues, as well as trends in obesity incidence rates, and hospital initiates designed to meet the needs of these patients, and the staff taking care of them, will be addressed during the program.

Program #2: Healthcare Facility Construction – Renovate or Build New?

In order to debate the pros and cons of renovation versus new construction, one must first qualify and quantify the scope of a project. Since there are many types of renovations/expansions, the decision usually will depend upon the size, complexity and age of each key planning unit or support service under evaluation as to whether an owner decides to renovate or build new. Additions/renovations can range from expanding the number of operating rooms in an existing OR suite, to expanding a whole emergency department (both are common requests), to the more simple projects such as adding more storage capacity to an existing materials management area.

However, a much larger decision comes when an owner is trying to decide whether to renovate and expand their existing facility in place, or to build a new replacement hospital. Quick rush to judgment to proceed may lead to substantial unexpected operational and financial outcomes which might unnecessarily further burden the long-term viability of the institution.

This program will provide an opportunity to discuss with recognized experts the process and the resources necessary for this significant decision.

Program #3: Ambulatory Care Facility Planning and Design

This presentation will explore the "From Thought to Finish" steps of developing an Ambulatory Care/Ambulatory Surgery Center. Attendees will learn the important pre-project steps of Strategic Fit, Owner Readiness and Financial Feasibility as well as those activities that take place during the design, construction and opening phases.

Program #4: Planning and Designing Healthcare Facilities for Children

In order to create a warm and comforting atmosphere for children's hospitals, architects and facility managers must put themselves inside the mind of a child. However, designing a pediatric facility doesn't mean just designing for toddlers. Users of these facilities span from age 0 to 18 and sometimes, due to the nature of some illnesses, even older than 18. So how do you incorporate imagery, navigational signs, and a sense of home that is joy giving to both the toddler who cannot yet read and the 18 year old? Join us as we discuss critical issues that should be addressed when designing a pediatric unit that is patient, family and staff friendly.

Michael E. McGinnis is a Principal in the firm of Quiring Medical a firm providing financial, strategic, development management and operating assistance to hospitals, non profit organizations and medical groups. Prior to his consulting work, Mr. McGinnis served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Community Medical Centers, the largest health care delivery system in Central California . He also served as the Chief Executive (COO) for CMC's Community Medical Center-Clovis, a 100 bed acute care facility located in Clovis , and previously as CMC's Chief Financial Officer. He has held healthcare senior management positions since 1981.


Lori Ruffner, RN

Lori Ruffner is a Registered Nurse and experienced Health Care Leader with over 30 years of success in hospital management and operations.

Trained in the U.S. Military, she became a perioperative nurse and then earned a Bachelors Degree in Health Science. Over the years she has held multiple roles as nurse manager/director of perioperative services where she was integral in the planning and designing of several ambulatory surgery centers, both freestanding and hospital based. Most recently she served as Chief Executive Officer of Community Medical Center – Clovis, Clovis, California where she was instrumental in the development of a facility based, Outpatient Care Center equipped with admitting/registration, outpatient imaging and lab services, 6 operating rooms, 3 endoscopy suites and pre-op and post operative units.

Stephen J. Short, AIA is Principal of the firm Stephen J. Short Planning, LLC.  Mr. Short has over 36 years of experience in detailed space programming, planning, and design for a wide range of Medical Facilities.  His experience includes planning and design services for 59 Hospitals and Medical Centers , 28 Medical Groups and HMOs, and dozens of Private Physician Practices.  Mr. Short is known for his unique hands-on reputation and skill at working closely with medical personnel to plan a project “before their eyes”.

Mr. Short holds a BA and Masters Degree in Architecture and is a licensed architect in California , Nevada , and other states.  He is an Emeritus Member of the American Institute of Architects, and the AIA California Council/Health Facilities Policy Committee.

George Pressler is the Founder and President of Planning Decision Resources, Inc. (PDR). Eric Kutche performs healthcare project design and project management services and plays a key role in HMC's business development. Throughout his career, Eric has been professionally involved with the intricacies of medical facilities planning and design, including the incorporation of methodologies that maximize infectious disease control during capital improvement projects. Eric has developed long-range plans, master facility and site development plans, functional, and space programs, certificate-of-need applications, and schematic designs for projects in both the not-for-profit and for-profit sectors of the healthcare industry. His professional affiliations include a research partnership and membership with the Advisory Board Company of Washington, DC; membership with the American Institute of Architects' Academy of Architecture for Health (AAH); and an Affiliate Partnership with the Center for Health Design.

Leo Old has 11 years of experience in working with healthcare institutions on issues related to infection control, hazardous materials, and regulatory compliance. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Christian Brothers University and his Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Memphis. Mr. Bennett is a Certified Industrial Hygienist and a registered fire protection engineer. During his career, he served as General Safety Officer for four years at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. As General Safety Officer, he was responsible for fire safety, emergency preparedness and other environmental health and safety matters. Mr. Old has served as an environmental health consultant for seven years and has provided health and safety training to personnel from a variety of organizations.
